Deep in the heart of Ethiopia’s Omo Valley, there lives a tribe that has captivated the imagination of the world. The Mursi people, known for their striking traditional lip plates and intricate body beautification, are a fascinating example of a culture that has managed to preserve its unique traditions despite modernization.
The Mursi people are a small tribe, numbering around 10,000 individuals, who live in the southwestern part of Ethiopia. They are a semi-nomadic people, living in small villages and relying on cattle herding and subsistence farming for their livelihood.
One of the most distinctive features of the Mursi people is their traditional lip plates. These plates, made from clay or wood, are worn by women as a symbol of beauty and strength. The plates are inserted into the lower lip and can be quite large, sometimes reaching up to 12 inches in diameter.
The lip plates are a rite of passage for Mursi women, who typically receive their first lip plate around the age of 15. The plate is inserted into the lower lip, and the lip is stretched to accommodate it. Over time, the plate is replaced with larger ones until the woman’s lip is stretched to its maximum extent.
