Culture is widely regarded as the cornerstone of any community, nurturing a sense of unity, accountability, and shared identity among its members. The origins of culture are often rooted in the need to address societal ills and promote harmony.
As we all know, Culture consist of the customs, beliefs, art, way of life, and social organization of a particular country. Aku people in Igbo etiti local government Area of Enugu state, are known for their rich cultural heritage, and many other things, such as good education, their cultural masquerade called ODO, and politics. However, this article is to explore the Aku people’s culture, but we will focus on their marriage culture which forbids women from committing adultery and it has heavy consequences following it
The Aku community’s marriage culture, which places a strong emphasis on fidelity and prohibits women from committing adultery. Marriage in their town is a sacred union between a man and a woman, supposed to be virtuous and undefiled. In Aku culture, women are expected to maintain absolute fidelity to their husbands. If a woman married to an Aku man commits adultery, calamity befalls the family.
when a wife engages in extramarital affairs in the Aku community, she either runs mad or, in most cases, dies. Although, if the woman confesses her transgression in a timely manner and agrees to perform the necessary rituals to appease the gods of the land, she may be spared. The importance placed on ritual cleansing helps scare people away from committing adultery and shows how seriously the Aku community takes cheating in marriage.
Interestingly, their men are not left behind, the Aku culture also places a significant burden on the husband in cases of infidelity. If the husband discovers his wife’s adulterous behavior and attempts to cover it up without performing the vital cleansing rituals, he risks suffering severe consequences. Also, if he continues to partake in his wife’s cooking, he may fall ill or suffer other misfortunes. This part of Aku culture shows how important it is to stay spiritually clean in marriage.
Someone might ask why men aren’t judged the same way for cheating. The reason is that Aku tradition allows men to have more than one wife, since polygamy is a normal and accepted part of their culture. Men are not expected to stay with just one woman. But then, this doesn’t mean they have no moral responsibilities, it’s just that their duties in marriage are understood in a different way.
The Aku people believe that marriage is a sacred institution blessed by the Almighty. As such, it is important to protect and uphold its sanctity. Marriage in the Aku community shows how much they value family, tradition, and their cultural roots. Although the punishment for adultery may seem harsh to outsiders, it reflects their strong dedication to protecting the honesty and respect within marriage.
